I thought it would be an idea to bring together a list of gameplay tips that apply both to rangers and to all other classes within Everquest. This is a work in progress at the moment and I will add new tips as I think of them.
Feel free to email me here if you have any interesting tips!
Why do rangers stand behind a monster and attack from behind in groups? We aren't rogues!
Indeed we aren't. However, as you reach the mid to higher levels you may notice that all melee classes, apart from the tank, should be behind the mob and not in front of it. The reason for this is that the tank (typically a warrior or shadowknight or a person with high health points and armour class) is the only person that should be in front of the mob taking damage. The logic behind it is simple, other classes do not have the same stats and to avoid being badly hurt, we let the tank take the hits. Warriors, Shadowknights and Paladins also have higher armour class, which means they have more resilient armour. Monks can also sometimes make good tanks at high levels, as even though they may not have as many healthpoints, they are good at avoiding blows. By just letting the tank get hit, it also means the healer can concentrate on healing one person, instead of three or four.
"One of the most important reasons I stand behind the mob is so I dont get any
reposte hits. It keeps me at 100% health points and saves the healer some mana" - Lanridorx
"Another reason to stand behind a monster is that they cannot dodge, block, or parry your attacks,
therefore you hit more and do more damage."
Potions, Potions, Potions
Unable to get a mind buff or health point buff? All is not lost. Locate the potion merchant Ralkor Stoneclaw in the Plane of Knowledge. He sells mind, haste, health and healing potions for level 40+ for a reasonable price. The potions may not be as effective as the buffs you get from other players, but are essential purchases and could get you out of trouble. Note, there is now also another potion vendor near Ralkor, who sells potions from level 5 :)
Need to improve your archery skill?
Often when you reach the higher levels you may find you archery skill is not good as you want it to be. To practice, ask a group if they wouldn't mind if you fire arrows at the monsters they are killing. Most of the time players don't mind, as long as you don't steal their kill.
Alternatives to Making Arrows
If you want a more immediate way of making arrows, rather than via tradeskilling there are a couple of options. Buy or loot a Bloody Ancille's Pouch that summons a stack of magic arrows and requires a purified crystal to do so. The crystals can be bought from vendors from the LDoN Wayfarer camps. Alternatively, buy or loot a Tolan's Darkwood Bracer that summons arrows 100 per stack.
Food and Water
Ensure you always have plent of food and water available. If you run out you won't die, however you will not regenerate mana or endurance.
Supply of Batwings
Dashelo Dalroshan in The Bazaar has an everlasting supply of batwings available which cost 1 silver. (I only found this out this a short while ago, so apologies to all the bats I've killed in the past for my levitation spell :p).
Explanation of the /location Command
or in other words 'What do you mean your at loc 2034.32, -356.01, 423.45 ????'
Walking on Ice
Ever tried walking on ice in Everquest? It can be quite fun sliding around, but also very dangerous... especially when visiting places like Velketor's Labyrinth where you really don't want to fall off that 1000 metre ledge. Try ducking and walking at the same time (press D). This will stop you from sliding so much.
How do I send a cross server tell?
;tell server name.playername (message). For example:
;tell antonius.saffron hello!
(Note that you use a semi colon at the beginning of the message, rather than a slash (/). Also be aware that if the server has two parts to its name, for example Antonius Bayle, you only use the first part (antonius).
How do I send a tell from EQ1 to a friend on EQ2?
[tell eq2.server.playername (message)
(Again note that you use a [ at the beginning of the tell).
How do I join/talk in and leave a Chat Channel?
To join, type /join channel name:channelpassword. For example:
/join openraid:raid (where the channel is called 'open raid' and the password is 'raid').
Not all channels have passwords, so if one wasn't set up, you would just type /join openraid
Once you have joined a channel it will be allocated a number. You will be able to see which channel number it has been given by typing /list
To talk in the chat channel, type /# (message) (# being the number of the chat channel you are on). For example:
/2 Hey guys!
To leave the channel type /leave 2 (or whatever channel you are on) or /leave all (which will make you leave all of your chat channels).
Hotkey Commands
If you right click on a hotkey, you can create a command to indicatng you are pulling a mob to your group (for example).
Here are the commands most commonly used:
%M - Returns the character's pet's name (when they have a pet)
%T - Returns the current target.
%S - Returns the subjective gender-specific pronoun for the target (He, She, It).
%O - Returns the objective gender-specific pronoun for the target (Him, Her, It).
%P - Returns the possessive gender-specific pronoun for the target (His, Her, Its).
%R - Returns the race of the target (only works on Player characters).
Example - Hotkey Command line 1 = /g Incoming %t watch your backs as %s looks pretty annoyed at me!
Which would display in group chat - Incoming a giant spider watch your backs as it looks pretty annoyed at me! (the giant spider being the monster you have targeted at the time and 'it' being the gender of the spider).
